This summer, over 200 community participants will continue creating a Lynchburg landmark: a 4,800 square foot tile mosaic mural. When the project is completed, the mural will detail the rich history of Central Virginia. Following the flow of the James River, the mural travels from the time before humans inhabitants, when buffalo and deer roamed freely, to the height of the Monacan Indian society, to the settlement of the area by the English, to the booming industrial period, to the current revitalization of downtown. Working under the guidance of professional artists, our volunteers are completing the panel of the mural that depicts the early town of Lynchburg during the 1880s. The completed mural will be one of the largest in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a lasting gift to the community.

We need your Help!

The CityArts Mosaic Mural Project has just received a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for $71,138. What makes this grant unique is that it requires each institution to raise funds to match the grant. This creates another opportunity to make CityArts an even more community based project. Amazement Square and CityArts will look to the community to help match these funds to meet the challenges of the grant and accomplish the project goals. Beryl Solla, a nationally recognized mosaic artist, has over 25 years of experience in art education, most recently as the Art Department Chair and Gallery Director at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, VA.  She specializes in public art with an emphasis on programs for children. She has facilitated many workshops designed to raise students’ awareness and understanding of public art, engage students in the creative process, and teach them the skills     necessary to create mosaic art.

Over the course of her career, she has led the creation of numerous public artworks, primarily in the centuries-old technique of mosaic art. Her commissions and projects include large-scale mosaic murals and sculptures in major cities across the southeast including Charlotte, Richmond, and Miami.

Beryl has been involved in the CityArts Mosaic Mural project since its inception in 2005 and Amazement Square is honored to have her return this summer to oversee the installation of the next panel of the wall. Ms. Solla’s participation is coordinated and funded by the Office of Education and Statewide Partnerships, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
